Meetings, Roundtables and Forums

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS)
The CFY steering committee met with CNCS to discuss its heightened interest in engaging disadvantaged youth in service and in identifying nonprofit organizations that serve disadvantaged youth. CNCS invited follow up in response to questions raised in the discussion and we participate in ongoing communications with the agency.

Federal Agency Roundtable
CFY helped to organize and sponsor a meeting for federal program staff responsible for developing, implementing and coordinating programs serving youth at risk. Several agencies, including: the Departments of Labor, Education, Justice, HHS, Transportation and Safety, NASA, the Pentagon, Institute for Museum and Library Services, CNCS and HUD participated. A panel presented the major recommendations and a rich discussion ensued among the agencies. The agencies were very interested and suggested venues for future meetings and presentations. We have had follow up meetings with several organizations.

USA Freedom Corps
The USA Freedom Corps hosted a roundtable with representatives of the Office of the First Lady and the Domestic Policy Council and representatives from CFY. An excellent discussion of the issues presented in the Memo was followed by a presentation regarding the administration’s heightened focus on youth and the summit being planned by the First Lady. CFY successfully urged planners of the summit to broaden the lens to look at the issues of older disconnected youth. Members of the Campaign for Youth participated in the Youth Summit.

Federal Interagency Council on Education
Representatives from CFY participated in discussions at the Federal Interagency Council on Education and established relationships for ongoing dialogue.

Department of Education Office of Vocational and Adult Education
Representatives from CFY met with the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Vocational and Alternative Education and her top staff at the U.S. Department of Education. At the meeting, CFY discussed ways to integrate the Campaign for Youth’s recommendations with the federal interagency work around coordination of services to this youth population.

Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration
Meetings were held with top officials at the Department of Labor. Discussion centered on the new Department of Labor Youth Vision and the multi-agency work occurring in response to the report of the White House Disadvantaged Youth Task Force.
