Congressional Staff Presentations and Activities

 

 

American Youth Policy Forum
AYPF hosted a forum on the graduation rate crisis at which Paul Barton (Educational Testing Service) presented his research on the growing drop out rate. Representatives from the Campaign for Youth made presentations about strategies to reduce the dropout rate and reconnect youth to educational opportunities. More than 140 participants from legislative staff, national policy organizations, federal agencies, and foundations attended.

Meeting with Director of Education Policy for the Chair of the House Education and Labor Committee
The Director of Education Policy met with national policy organizations to discussed ways to increase support within congress for increased investment in this youth population. The work and agenda of the Campaign for Youth was presented and discussion ensued on ways to increase visibility during the deliberations of the subcommittees.

Recommendations to the Senate HELP Committee
Campaign for Youth Steering Committee members worked with Senator Kennedy to amend his T-FELAS bill to broaden the eligibility for T-FELAS bill to include community-based organizations that focus on providing alternative learning environments for students for whom traditional schools do not seem to be the answer.

Submitted Testimony to House Ways and Means Committee
The Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support held a hearing on disconnected youth. Campaign for Youth submitted testimony for the record. To view the testimony, click here.

Participated in the Congressional Black Caucus Education Summit
CFY steering committee members participated on the panel on “The Road Less Traveled: The Need for Alternative Education Options.”

Submitted Language for Consideration in the Innovations Act
CFY drafted language for the development of Innovation Pathways for Reconnecting youth as part of the Innovations legislation in the House. Text for that proposal can be found here.

Presented at the House Ways and Means Working for Change Forum
CFY Presented to legislative staff on its recommendations for a National Investment Strategy to Reconnect Youth and facilitated a discussion on the recommendations.
